Mentoring

The Concise Oxford Thesaurus definition of a Mentor includes - 'Advisor, counsellor, therapist, confidant, teacher, tutor, coach.'

Effective mentoring needs to be customised to the requirements of each client: there can be no 'one size fits all'. I specialise in the areas of personal development, managing people, communications skills, conflict resolution, and people problem solving. I also help managers to become more assertive and manage stress.

Who Should Consider Engaging A Mentor?

1. Those who want to realise their potential or who would benefit from the support of a more experienced manager as part of their personal development.

2. Anyone finding their role stressful and/ or encountering difficulties in delivering expected results.

3. Senior managers with responsibility for the performance of others who have a team member who fits 1 or 2 above.

4. Anyone who feels they would benefit from a trustworthy confidant to use as a sounding board to help them develop solutions to personal and work issues.

Mentoring may be a continuous process for a set period of time or 'on demand' with spot sessions when needed.

Mentoring works on the basis that two heads are better than one, especially when the heads bring different experience and perspectives to the relationship. It is based on the principle of synergy and the use of coaching expertise. The client may sometimes be more accomplished than the mentor but the power of the mentoring relationship comes from the partnership of expertise, experience, and different perspectives.

As a mentor an important role is in challenging the client's thinking and sometimes playing 'Devil's Advocate' in the generation of options. However, once a decision has been taken it's the mentor's job to totally support his/her client in the successful implementation of their decision/s.

My aim is to be a trustworthy ally in life and career, a resource to be engaged in the pursuit of emotional competence, heightened performance, and reduced negative stress.
